The frog or toad, hedgehog and fish were both funerary and life symbols at the same time. Their peculiar relationship -even equation-wuith the uterus of the lifegiving, regenerating and transforming Goddess accounts for their prominent role in Old European symbolism. This toad/frog on a Middle Minoan amphora from Crete, 2nd mill. B.C. was found painted below a uterus sign. There was a widespread belief that the womb was an animal which wandered about the body.
